Shulack1

Shulack villager

Shulacks are a sapien race native to Balaurea. While similar in appearance to Shugos, they only share few characteristics. Their neutrality is fully diverse; from mere villagers seeking aid from Daevas, to grave robbers and allies to the Balaur.

Characteristics[]

Much like Shugos, their appearance is similar to a rodent, with a soft fur and a long tail. While Shugos appear to have a shorter golden fur, Shulacks have a much fluffier and somewhat uncaring appearance. Their fur will be in most cases silver, however, in the case of the Steel Rose sailors, it will show a bright pink.

They seek comfortable lives, but their love towards riches are not as fervent as Shugos'. They do have ethics they follow, however they are easily corrupted by their wishes and opt for illicit means to reach them. They are mostly known by the big robber bands (such as Steel Rake Pirates, The Nightshade Clan or Steel Rose Pirates) who loot ancient temples or interfere with shipments. Nonetheless, this popularity overshadows their true nature, causing the most noble Shulacks to be distrusted.

History[]

Steel Rose mercenary

Much of their Pre-Cataclysmic story is not revealed. Some speculate they used to be Shugos, trapped outside the Aetheric Field, who were affected by the outer halves' harsh environment or lack of Aether, causing them to evolve into a completely different race to their ancestors. Others believe they have always inhabited their areas, but kept a low profile during generations.

Whichever their origin is, their fate is still very different to their counterparts. While Shugos were known for their ability to blueprint advanced machinery and organising trading empires, Shulacks stayed with a simple life, depending on rustic weapons, clothes and shelters, which granted them a superb ability to craft. One could categorise Shugos as designers, and Shulacks as builders.

In society[]

In Balaurea they are established in scattered villages across all their regions, from Gelkmaros and Sarpan to Katalam. As part of them, they follow a single elder. Without this chieftain's lead, they become too unorganised and desperate, making this a very important role within their tribe.

While several prefer to live in tribes, other Shulacks have allied to the Balaur, working as simple maintenance mechanics, in most cases perforce. This is shown in Esoterrace, in which a tribe was enslaved by them, awaiting for a rescue. At the same time, other tribes, such as the one present in Aturam Sky Fortress, got their elder enslaved and were forced to integrate the Kaichin Engineering League, giving assistance to Dredgions.

Furthermore, as Shugos gained more power and organised themselves, they hired Shulacks, along with several other sapiens, to work for them. This is shown in cases like Golderine in Danaria, where they were hired as rail repairers and builders.

Through Atreia, Shulacks are presented as defenceless creatures (simple villagers, friendly to Daevas and humans, offering their services as well) or formidable foes.
